Letter of Introduction (posted January 20)

I've never had to do a letter of introduction, so I will try my hardest to meet the standards of this assignment. I'm not big on writing but I feel that writing about myself would be easy and more fun to do.

My name is Dejah Banks, I'm a junior at Roosevelt. I am a very busy teenager because I have a job, go to school, and do some after school activities so at times I feel very overwhelmed. One of my favorite activities is reading, but only when I want to, not when a teacher tells me too. I enjoy reading because it takes me to a new place and removes me from the real world. Being forced to read makes me not want to read but I try my hardest to finish an assignment.

One of my passions for when I grow up is to be a physicians assistant, so right now I'm in the CNA program at Central Campus to help get my foot in the door in the medical word. It's one of my passions because I enjoy helping people and making them feel good, so what better way to do those tasks than to work with sick people. I've had many career choices but I always come back to this choice.

I am very passionate for helping young girls gain confidence, that is why I am a high school mentor in the program Whyld Girls. Whyld Girls is a girls group that that promotes confidence in young girls and their voices. I believe that everyone should be able to speak their mind and not be afraid to be themselves. Since I've been a part of the program for 5 years I have gained more confidence since my 6th grade year and I'm always up to speak my mind about a situation.

There are many more things that make up who I am but here is a couple of main things that do ! Hope you enjoyed getting to know me !

Personal Reflection on Topic of Inquiry(posted January 27 -- Peer Response January 29)

There are many problems that are out in the world, one that I particularly care about is the inequality of women in the workplace. There is a huge difference in the working world when it comes to men and women. Some people say it's not true but I believe that men have more rights, power, and pay in the working place and I think it is not right.

"Glass ceiling" is a term used for saying there is an unreachable barrier that keeps women from rising in the corporate world and I think that is not right and is unfair to all women who have just as much capabilities to become successful and huge in the business world as men do. I don't understand why people feel that women should have less rights and less pay then men just because they're "different". Women have the same capabilities to do what men do so there should not be a difference.

They need to base the differences off of skills rather than the difference of the sex. It's not right to make a difference based under those circumstances. There needs to be change, throughout the whole progress of America there has always been prejudice and women being treated unequally. Something has to change .

Peer Response January 29, Joe Kastner to Dejah Banks:

I totally agree, I believe woman’s rights are being abused, especially in the workplace. As a man I, know that there are a lot of really stupid guys out there and a lot of bright intelligent women that would be twice the worker they are. I also think your exactly on it with, “they need to base the differences off skills not by sex.” That’s what they’re doing wrong and something needs to change. I like your topic and stick with it.

Rough Draft Definition (posted February 3 -- Peer Response February 5

There are many inequalities in the U.S. One that many people are mainly concerned about is the female inequality in the workplace. Female inequality is an unfair and judgmental type of treatment on women where they are looked upon as inferior compared to men. When it comes to this issue, the characteristics are difference in pay, favoritism, and double-standards.

Everyone knows that when it comes to salary in the corporate world, men make more money than women. The term “glass ceiling” means there is an unreachable barrier that keeps women from rising in the corporate world. Many believe there is really a barrier when it comes to women because some people feel they are not capable of doing the same things as men. This glass ceiling has been around for awhile, which means some changes need to be made. Pay should be based on skill rather than differences.

When it comes to favoritism, it’s very common in the workplace. The main type of favoritism that can occur in the workplace is when a male boss favors only male employees. It is very common in the workplace. The boss will like the male employees because he is as well a male and they can bond and relate to each other easily. It’s hard for a women employee to get attention or praise because they boss is too focused on the males, which is not fair. This type of treatment does not give the female employee the chance to show her abilities and skills.

For a very long time double-standards has existed in every aspect of life basically. When it comes to the business world there are many double-standards between men and women. People expect women to work easy jobs like a secretary instead of an executive position or a nurse instead of being a doctor. They’re looked down as being weak creatures who should only be concerned with taking care of the family and cleaning the house. There are multiple things that women are capable of doing besides those things. Women have the ability to do the same tasks as men and better yet some can do them better.

In the world there are many inequalities that surround everyone every day. Female inequality in the workplace is a issue that should be changed to meet everyone’s needs. The women have to experience having less pay, not being the favorite, and having to deal with double standards. Like the Declaration of Independence states, we are all equal, so we should all be treated equally.

Joe Kastner Peer Revision- Good! I like your material and subject. You have some really good ideas, but I feel like you could expand a little more on what you currently have and maybe even try to research so more ideas. Maybe go further in the past to give the reader a better insight, bases, background, whatever on women’s rights in the workplace. You like maybe in time war, women worked in factories or in the 50s when woman didn’t want to work, but wanted to stay in the home. Stuff like that. Now to the writing portion. You start your paper by repeating “female inequality in the workplace,” exactly in two sentences back to back. Also in your third paragraph you tend to use the word male too much. So try to use better word choice. Other than that your papers pretty solid but needs some work and in my opinion more material and ideas. But good job!

Joe Kastner Peer Revision- Doesn’t look like you really fixed anything or even changed your paper at all. So just read what I wrote in my last peer revision and just try to go off that and I think your paper will be looking pretty good!

Everyone knows that when it comes to salary in the corporate world, statistics have shown that men make more money than women. In history women have always been treated unfairly and did not have the opportunity to have a career. During World War I, women were able to obtain jobs that were only for men. Reflection Joe Kastner: I thought you did a good job, had a good topic and fixed many of your problems recognized before in your rough draft. Overall I thought your organization, diction, and ideas were very good. This essay was well written and I cant wait to revise your comparison essay.

Reflection #1 (posted February 20 -- Peer Response February 22)
The purpose of my wriiting was to show that women's rold in business is not fair and that it needs to changed so that women and men all have an equal oppurtunity to get certain jobs or get promoted. The intended audience would be for bosses that treat women unfair in business and people in general. The exigence of this writing is that women have come a long way in history but there are still same things that should have progressed more for women but they haven't. The message is that rights for women in the workplace need to be changed and made equal. I feel that my paper could have been done better but i feel that I was rushed and didnt have enough time to make it the way i want.
Rough Draft Comparison (postedFebruary 24 -- Peer Response February 26 )

“Life is not fair”, is a phrase that is said all the time in everyday life. In this case, job and career ethics is not fair when it comes to women. A woman in the corporate world is treated unfairly and is looked upon as less of a person compared to men. On the other hand, a woman in the medical field is the perfect picture and there is not much unfair treatment based off of gender. There is an obvious difference between these two career structures and also some comparisons.

Women are inferior in the corporate place compared to men, which is a well known fact. In many people’s eyes, they believe that women are not made for the business world. An obvious difference between men and women is the salary. Statistics show that women make about 81 percent of what men earn. When a woman wants to hold a high position in business like a CEO or executive, they are looked at funny, simply because they are females. Most women are treated like they’re incapable of doing things and looked at as being weak. Unfortunately, it will be hard for women to come up on top in the corporate place, but it is not like that in every occupation

When it comes to the medical field, women are dominant compared to men. In the medical field women are not treated as unfair in the medical field but they do have the upper hand.

This is all I could come up with.

Reflection Joe Kastner: Good idea working with men compared to women and I understand that you havnt come up with much yet. But I would just use women in the medical field as an example and not the basis of your paper. Instead find various examples of men and woman in the workplace and compare them to each other. Ill help you more when you complete your paper.

Though working in the corporate world and in the medical field is completely different but there are some things that they both have in common. In both of these fields women are still underpaid compared to men. Statistics show that women make about 81 percent of what men earn in the medical field and in the corporate business women make 77.4 percent of what men make. There has always been in a gap when it comes to income between men and women. Another difference is that women are still treated unfairly in both aspects of these careers. When a woman wants to hold a high position in business like a CEO, they are looked at funny simply because she is a female and people do not think women can handle that position. In the medical field, women are only supposed to be nurses but when they decide to become a doctor of some sort, people think it is a huge jump and that they are in over their heads. Society makes it out that women are incapable of holding big positions, which is not true. On the other hand, there are some differences between these 2 fields.

When it comes to women working in the medical field it is stereotypical. Society has always been okay with women working as nurses or in the medical field in general. Women are treated fairly in the medical world. Men and women are both treated the same because their dynamics and why they are there are all the same. Another difference

In history the medical place has always been for women to handle, so it is natural for them to be the ones mainly in charge. The last difference is that it is easier for women to get promoted in the medical field since that “glass ceiling” is not present. There would be no problem with a man being promoted rather than a woman since they are both on equal grounds.

When it comes to careers, women are treated in different ways depending on their field. There are always different types of treatments on different people when it comes to jobs, but the one that is most present in today’s working world is the treatment of women. Mostly there are mainly differences in pay and dominance. When it all comes down to it, there are many different types of treatment in jobs when it comes to women.

Rough Draft Argument (posted April 6 -- Peer Response April 8)

In today’s society, women have to overcome many obstacles, especially in the working world. It is hard for women to achieve in business because there are so many barriers and they are treated unfairly. It is a known fact that men are paid more, women are looked upon as being weak, and if they are pregnant sometimes they won’t get hired. The way women are treated today is not right.

When it comes to salary, everyone knows that men make more money than women. It is not fair that just because women are women, they get a lesser pay. Most of the time women can do a better job at a certain task than men, but the women still get the shorter end of the stick. Women earn 73.8 cents for every dollar men earn. This problem is the primary reason of how women are treated unfairly in the in the workplace.

Another reason of how the women of the workplace are discriminated against is when workers say women aren’t able to do a certain task. In history, women have always been seen as weak creatures and fragile; which is not true. Many women are capable of doing many things but aren’t given the chance to show their capabilities.

There have been many instances when a woman applies for a position while being pregnant, and she does not get hired. Research shows that a manager hiring a pregnant women is unlikely because they feel that it would be a waste of time and their money, because the mom will have to be out of work for a certain amount of time after they have their child.

In conclusion, women are treated unequally because of the simple fact that they are females. They get unfair pay, they have to face condescending demeanor from others, and if pregnant they get discriminated against. Even though women’s rights have come a long way, there is still some distance to go .

Final Argument (posted April 20 -- Peer Response April 23)

Women Inequality

In today’s society, women have to overcome many obstacles, especially in the working world. It is challenging for women to achieve in business because there are so many barriers and they are treated unfairly. It is a known fact that men are paid more, women are looked upon as being weak, and if they are pregnant sometimes they won’t get hired. The way women are treated today is not right.

When it comes to salary, everyone knows that men make more money than women. It is not fair that just because women are women, they get a lesser pay. This problem is the primary reason of how women are treated unfairly in the in the workplace.

Another reason of how the women of the workplace are discriminated against is when workers say women aren’t able to do a certain task. In history, women have always been seen as weak creatures and fragile. Their job was to sit at home with the children, clean the house, and cook. Since the progression of America, women’s role has changed incredibly. During World War II, women took jobs that were usually done by men. The fact that women were able to take up factory jobs done by men shows that women have as many skills as men. Many women are capable of doing many things but aren’t given the chance to show their capabilities. They don’t always have the chance to be promoted because they do not get to show what they can do.

There have been many instances when a woman applies for a position while being pregnant, and she does not get hired. Research shows that a manager hiring a pregnant woman is unlikely because they feel that it would be a waste of time and their money, because the mom will have to be out of work for a certain amount of time after they have their child. Just because a women is pregnant does not mean they should not be able to get a job that they are perfectly fine at doing. It is a ridiculous that a woman cannot be hired because they are having a child.

In conclusion, women are treated unequally because of the simple fact that they are females. They get unfair pay, they have to face condescending demeanor from others, and if pregnant they get discriminated against. Those are silly factors to base off of a woman. Even though women’s rights have come a long way, there is still some distance to go for women and men to truly be equal.

Reflection #3 (posted April 23)

I feel that there wasn't much more I could do with my essay because the topic is not very broad and there weren't many things I could expand on. Other than that I think my essay is well organized and structured well. I used more vocabulary and used very well known facts. I could've done better but I would have needed more time .
